Thorstein Veblen was an American institutional economist and social critic. He is best known for his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class" (1899), in which he coined the term "conspicuous consumption." Veblen's work critiqued the economic and social structures of late 19th-century America, focusing on the behavior of the wealthy elite.
